WNTI Supports Mural Honoring Trout Conservation
On Oct 30, 2024 Logan City, Utah unveiled the beautiful masterpiece of Utah’s native Chris Peterson to the public at Merlin Olsen Park. Peterson painted a 70-foot vibrant Bear River cutthroat trout on the walls of a tunnel along with constellations that play off the patterns of the spots the cutthroat offers. Colorful mountains, butterflies, and a river map flowing across the grid of Utah fill the entire tunnel with life and purpose. The purpose of this work was to honor the conservation work of many partners and educate the public by linking them to historic information about the Bear River Cutthroat Trout and its fish habitat protection projects, some already completed, and some future.
This mural is part of a larger effort called The Utah Wildlife Walls program. In 2022, Peterson partnered with Utah Wildlife Federation to launch a statewide arts, science and engagement campaign to celebrate wildlife in every one of Utah’s 29 counties with the installation of a mural by Peterson. More Utah Wildlife Walls can be seen here.
The Bear River Cutthroat mural was the product of a partnership between the Western Native Trout Initiative; Utah Wildlife Federation, Utah Cutthroat Slam, and a Division of Wildlife Resource and Utah Trout Unlimited partnership; Bridgerland Audubon Society; and Cache Anglers. This mural was one of Western Native Trout Initiative’s (WNTI) small grant awards. Learn more about WNTI’s small grants projects here.
