Two-thirds of the land in the United States is privately owned, and these working farms, ranches, and forests account for much of the nation’s wildlife habitat and open space. Voluntary, incentive-based conservation of these working lands is essential for landscape conservation and carries enormous benefits for priorities such as wildlife habitat, landscape connectivity and riparian corridors. The Western U.S. is home to some of the Nation’s most globally unique, historic, and extensive intact ecosystems and endemic wildlife. A landscape composed of a blend of private, public, and tribal holdings, these rangelands and forests are defined as working lands that support vital ecologic, economic, and cultural values for the Nation. Coordination and planning of conservation actions across the landscape raises the net benefit of ecosystem services produced and provides for the unique life history requirements for wildlife that have specific seasonal habitat needs dispersed across multiple landownerships and jurisdictional boundaries.
This workshop will identify key Farm Bill-related resources available to conserve working lands on private lands and reveal important strategies needed to seamlessly align state-identified fish and wildlife-related priorities with program implementation. Participants will hear directly from people on the front lines of conservation about how they have structured their partnerships to link diverse priorities, leverage resources and achieve landscape-scale outcomes. Opportunities to further expand working lands conservation through targeted WAFWA Initiatives and a strategic partnership with the USDA will set the table for meaningful open discussion and dialogue.
