North American Mule Deer Conservation Plan

To address the multitude of issues impacting recovery of mule deer populations, the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) chartered the Mule Deer Working Group (MDWG). This group, comprised of representatives of all agencies that are members of WAFWA, was established to address 3 specific tasks including:

1. Develop solutions to common mule deer management problems.

2. Identify and prioritize cooperative research and management activities in the western states and provinces.

3. Increase communications between agencies and the public that are interested in mule deer, and between those in agencies, universities, and nongovernmental organizations that are interested in mule deer management.

Toward this end, the Group has developed strategies to improve mule deer management throughout the West, and has effectively increased communication among mule deer managers, researchers, administrators, and the public.

An interagency Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in support of this conservation plan has been signed by major land management agencies and WAFWA.
