2024 Western Black Bear Workshop

A WAFWA Sanctioned Workshop

The Western Black Bear Workshop is held every three years by the Wildlife Chiefs Committee sanctioned by WAFWA. The workshop provides a forum where leading black bear managers and researchers share research results, management strategies, and emerging issues in the realms of black bear management throughout North America.

The 14th Western Black Bear Workshop will be held in Jackson, Wyoming in May 2024.

Submit an Abstract

The workshop is now accepting abstract submissions for posters, presentations, and agency updates. Abstracts are limited to 300 words. The deadline for submission has been extended to March 11. Successful applicants will be notified the week of March 15, 2024.

Topics include:

Population demographics, ecology and behavior
Management in dynamic landscapes
Applicable monitoring and research
Human dimensions
Black bears and grizzly bears

Workshop Schedule

At this point, the schedule is tentative and subject to change.

Monday, May 13 – Registration opens and exhibitors begin set up in the afternoon. Welcome social begins at 6pm MT.

Tuesday, May 14 – Welcome and Opening address begin at 8am MT followed by agency status reports. After lunch (provided) will be additional presentations. Poster session will be that evening.

Wednesday, May 15 – Presentations continue all day. Dinner banquet in the evening.

Thursday, May 16 – Presentations in the morning. Business Meeting in early afternoon. Optional field trip available that evening.

The 14th Western Black Bear Workshop will be held May 13-16, 2024 at the Snow King Resort 400 E. Snow King Ave. Jackson, Wyoming.

You can also call 1-800-522-5464 to make a reservation. This rate will be available through April 19, 2024 or until rooms are sold out. Continental breakfast is included with the room rate as well as the banquet dinner. Check in is 4pm, check out is 11am.

Snow King is located approximately 10 miles from the Jackson Hole airport. While the resort does not offer a shuttle to the airport, they recommend Snake River Taxi who can be reached at snakerivertaxi@yahoo.com.
